Watford’s
fire cover must not be reduced, say Lib Dems
Even a senior fire officer has
admitted that the proposed cuts – which are likely
to be discussed by the county council early next year – are
a reduction in what is offered to Watford today. In
future Watford will rely on appliances from places
like Rickmansworth and Hemel Hempstead to help out
if it loses its second appliance.
Why are these cuts being proposed?
Stephen Giles-Medhurst says: ‘These
changes are being forced on Herts because it has been
told by the Labour government it must cut costs in
its fire service. Here in central Watford we will see
a real reduction in service. Together with Lib Dem
borough councillors and the Mayor, we are fighting
the changes that will affect Watford’s fire cover.’

“ ..[We are]
forced into making these proposals as a result
of the deal done by John Prescott to ‘modernise’ fire
and rescue services across the country.”

Council, Watford Observer, 29 July,2005
