Concessionary fares
IT comes as no surprise
that the government’s
‘free’ bus pass scheme
for pensioners is not
quite what it was made
out to be. It only covers travel within
the borough of Watford and only at offpeak
times.
Our Watford pass has been much
better than the government
offering. As a result we are negotiating
with the bus companies to continue
Watford’s local scheme. Some councils
have used this as a chance to end their
own local scheme, which in turn reduces
our bargaining power with the bus
companies. In that sense the government
scheme has hindered not helped.
Second dial-a-ride bus
WATFORD Borough Council is
allocating money in its budget for a
second dial-a-ride bus for the town.
This service is the responsibility of
Conservative-run Herts County
Council. But the county council decided
to fund only one bus for each of the
county’s districts. Disgracefully, the
county left it to district councils to make
up any shortfall in service. The Lib Dem
administration at Watford obtained the
latest data about use of the service,
which showed that Watford residents
really need this second vehicle.
Yet again the county council is shirking
its statutory responsibilities. It does the
same with meals on wheels by refusing
to provide funding, so that Watford
Council has to foot the bill.
