Improving
services, keeping
costs down
AS Mayor, I see my most important
role as being your representative in
the town hall – making sure you get
value for money from your council
tax. For me, that does not mean doing
only the bare minimum at the
cheapest cost.
One of the good things about living
in our town is that it has lots going on – people expect to find things here
that you would not get in Bushey or
Croxley Green.
We don’t just provide the statutory
services. Watford Borough Council
funds the Palace Theatre, the
voluntary sector (such as the CAB)
and a range of leisure facilities. It pays
for measures to tackle crime, from
CCTV to activities for young people.
We don’t have to do these things,
but they contribute to life in Watford!
HOW
IT WAS: In Labour’s last
year in charge Watford Council
set a 10% rise in council tax.
NOW: Under the Lib Dems we
have had the lowest increase in
Hertfordshire for three years
running. The rises each year have
been 3.9, 2.7 and 1.9%. This year
we expect it to be below 2%.
We have worked to make the
council more efficient and effective.
This year I expect that for the second
year running we will propose a
council tax rise of less than 2 per cent – compared with 10 per cent in
Labour’s last year in charge.
The Borough Council gets just 18
per cent of the council tax you pay.
This means just £20 per month for a
Band D property. The bulk goes to
Herts County Council, where the
Conservative administration has
consistently put up your council tax
by much more than inflation!
