Report Back
Sal
Brinton’s
Parliamentary Update
Chancellor’s spending review is bad
news for Watford
WATFORD’S Council Tax payers will be among the losers from
Gordon Brown’s spending review.
District Councils like Watford are set
to get just 0.6 per cent extra funding next year – not
enough to cover inflation.
Labour are cutting back how much they
give councils for services like street cleaning, refuse collection
and the environment
They place more duties on councils – such as licensing and recycling
for example – but don’t match this with extra money.
The whole thing means that council tax is likely to go up by
at least 6.7 per cent across the country, with higher increases
for
district councils. Councils will be torn between reducing
services and increasing council tax.
The whole thing makes a nonsense of
Labour’s commitment to
improving public services.
