Report Back
Elected Mayor Dorothy ThornhillDorothy writes:
‘A better council means a better town’
IN previous reports I have had to dwell on all the work we have had to do to sort out the mess left by Labour at Watford Town Hall.
Positive about the future
After lots of hard work, I can now be more positive. The accounts are now ‘clean’. We have doubled recycling rates. Our planning service is meeting its targets.
The Audit Commission has praised the improvements we have made in the past two years and described us as ‘a council on the move.’
We have opened a new BMX track at Harebreaks Adventure Playground and a skate park in the town centre. In the autumn new sports facilities, which we will share with Westfield School, are set to open. Many play areas have been refurbished across the town.
Nearly £4 million has been saved in the council budget by cutting waste not services and we have had the lowest Council Tax increase in the county for two years running.
Hospital plans
Along with the Hospital Trust we are moving ahead with plans for a modern hospital for Watford. I am delighted that this project has passed the first hurdle in getting government funding.
There can be no room for complacency – Watford Council still has a long way to go. But I have a strong team of Lib Dem councillors working with me and I feel that the council is moving forward, and will be able to play its full part in creating a better town.
