Elected
Mayor Dorothy Thornhill first took her seat on Watford Borough
Council in 1992 - one of only a few gains from the Tories that
year. She was re-elected twice more, gaining over 60% of the
vote.
She has played a leading
role in taking on Labour in their heartland wards and winning
seats from them!
In 1998/99.Dorothy was the
first ever Lib Dem (civic) mayor of Watford and in 2002, with
a massive 72% of the vote, she became both the first Liberal
Democrat and the first woman in Britain to hold the office of
Elected Mayor.
In her first year of office
she and her administration have had to tackle a legacy of disastrous
financial management, a damning Audit Commission Report and an
unacceptable standard of public services from a Town Hall whose
morale had reached rock bottom.
Things are now changing for
the better. This year the Audit Commission has reported good
progress, the Council Tax increase is the lowest in the County,
and Watford is on the mend. In this town, the Lib Dems are really
