 George
Derbyshire
George Derbyshire has lived in SW Herts for over 30 years,
first in Kings Langley and since 1981 in Watford on the Cassiobury
Estate. After graduating from the LSE in law, George worked
first in Manchester and then joined the BBC where he spent
14 years in a variety of management roles, including four
years in Television News. His last job there was as Organiser,
Schools Television.
In 1978 George was appointed Director of Administration
at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama in the Barbican,
a position he held for 11years. In 1989 George was invited
to go to Hong Kong to work alongside a former Guildhall colleague
as Deputy Director of The Hong Kong Academy for Performing
Arts. This conservatoire-type institution trained local Hong
Kong students who were aiming for professional careers as
performers or support professionals in music, dance , drama
and film/television.
On returning to the UK in 1997, George retired from full-time
employment and now undertakes consultancy assignments from
time to time in the fields of management and the performing
arts. He has also become a voluntary certificated Generalist
Adviser with Citizens Advice and advises at the Watford Citizens
Advice Bureau in St Mary’s Churchyard twice a week.
Until his election last year as a Watford Borough Councillor
for Park ward, he was a member of the Bureau’s Management
Committee.
George is particularly concerned about the poor state of
the roads and pavements in Watford . If elected to the County
Council, he will work to try to ensure that Watford gets
its fair share of the budget allocated for the maintenance
of roads and pavements and that the County Council gets best
value for the money it spends on this infrastructure.
George is also interested in the rights
and advice services that the County Council delivers. He
wants to ensure that Watford residents have equality of access
to these services and that they complement and do not duplicate
services being delivered at a more local level by voluntary
agencies and District Councils themselves.
