 Stephen
Giles-Medhurst
Stephen was elected as a County Councillor
in 2001 for Oxhey and Central Watford and has been the Liberal
Democrats Transport Spokesperson since then. He was been
particularly active in campaigning for improvements in highways
and on
traffic issues. He has exposed the various failures of Herts
Highways in getting repairs done and traffic schemes completed.
He led the call for an audit of the Oxhey
Village Green Zone works. Here the County failed to do the
works to residents' satisfaction and caused massive inconvenience
to residents and local traders. They even had to come back
and rebuild
several of the traffic calming features.
He has successfully got two new pedestrian
crossings in Central Watford at Beechen Grove and Lower
High Street. He
fought to ensure the traffic lights at Watford Junction
Station stayed turned off, easing traffic congestion
around the
station
Before moving to this area, Stephen
was a Harrow Borough Councillor from 1978 to 1998,
served as Mayor from 1995-1996, and chaired several
committees including Traffic, Finance and planning during
that time.
Stephen lives in Watford in Tudor Manor Gardens and is a
Senior Policy advisor to Customs currently working in Whitehall
having previously led an anti smuggling team at Heathrow.
Stephen says,
"My Council work varies from dealing with day to day matters
which residents bring to me, such as problems with trees,
broken pavements, help with services such as Adult Care,
children excluded from school, graffiti, street cleansing,
provision
of parking bays, yellow lines and so on, to the major issues
which sometimes take months to resolve.
If re-elected, I and my Liberal Democrat
colleagues, will continue to press Herts Highways to address
the problems with our
roads, particularly in regard to major traffic congestion
and road repairs. Under the Conservatives the County Council
has
failed to deal with these issues and even cut the funding
for road repairs and traffic schemes in the Watford area.
This is a
disgrace, as this area has the highest traffic congestion
in the whole of Herts."
